Savage Wilderness offers guided climbs via the Sirimon and Chogoria routes, approaching the mountain from the north and east, respectively. Guests can climb and descend via the same route or choose an “up and over” experience for a more complete mountain adventure.
The Chogoria Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded ways to explore Mount Kenya. Known for its spectacular lakes, dramatic landscapes, and peaceful trails, this route offers a more immersive wilderness experience and is typically completed over 6 days.
The Sirimon Route is considered one of the easier and most popular routes on Mount Kenya. It features gradual climbs, beautiful valleys, and incredible views along the Mackinder Valley, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a balanced mountain experience.
Our Mount Kenya trekking itineraries are designed to help you fully experience the beauty of the mountain while allowing proper acclimatisation and time to enjoy the scenery. From rainforest trails and alpine lakes to dramatic valleys and summit views, every day offers a unique adventure on Africa’s second-highest mountain.
You will meet your guides in Nairobi or Nanyuki before transferring to the Chogoria Park gate, where the trekking adventure begins. After meeting the porters and organising equipment, you enter the beautiful Mount Kenya rainforest and continue towards your first campsite near Chogoria Gate.
Spend the evening relaxing around the campfire while enjoying dinner surrounded by the sounds of the mountain forest. This day also includes a gentle acclimatisation walk to help prepare for the higher altitudes ahead. After breakfast, the trek continues towards Lake Ellis at an altitude of approximately 3,200 metres. The route passes through scenic moorlands, tussock grass, giant heathers, and colourful alpine flowers unique to Mount Kenya.
Arriving at camp in the afternoon gives you time to relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and prepare for the next stage of the expedition.
Day three takes you away from the main trails and deeper into Mount Kenya’s spectacular wilderness. Hike around mountain lakes, cross ridges, and enjoy incredible views across the Gorges Valley and Northern Moorlands.
After lunch beside a mountain stream, continue towards Lake Michaelson, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful campsites on Mount Kenya.
Today’s route involves a more demanding climb towards Mintos Camp at 4,200 metres. The dramatic mountain scenery becomes even more impressive as you move higher into the alpine zone.
In the afternoon, you can take a short walk to “The Temple”, a famous viewpoint overlooking a dramatic vertical cliff. After dinner, an early night is recommended before the summit attempt.
The summit push begins early in the morning before sunrise. Trek through the darkness towards Point Lenana, reaching the summit in time for breathtaking sunrise views across Kenya’s landscapes.
After celebrating at the summit and capturing photos, the descent begins towards Shiptons Camp before continuing down to Judmeier Camp. This is the most physically demanding day of the expedition but also one of the most rewarding experiences on Mount Kenya.
After breakfast, the final section of the trek descends through scenic mountain trails back to the park gate. Here you will meet your transport and begin the journey back towards Nairobi.
On the way, stop at Savage Wilderness River Camp for lunch and a chance to relax after completing your unforgettable Mount Kenya adventure.
Not everyone wants to summit, and that is completely fine. We also offer scenic hiking experiences around Mount Kenya focused on exploring the lakes, landscapes, and unique ecosystems without reaching the summit.
